PMG MINING took on the National Arbor Week as part of its quest to ensure food security. The week is celebrated each year - in the first week of September - and emphasizes the promotion of trees. It is also intended to appeal to all South African citizens to plant native trees for a sustainable environment.
Through this initiative spearheaded by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, it contributes significantly to the prevention of food insecurity in our various communities.
As a front-runner for community projects, PMG Mining Company donated: seeds, shady and fruit trees to three high schools; five primary schools; two clinics; one hospital and two libraries in the Postmasburg region.
The seeds planted, particularly at schools, will provide much-needed relief in the school's feeding schemes.
PMG Mine manager, John-Ross Van Nel said: “It is of paramount importance for us as a mining company to reinvest in our communities in the Tsantsabane region. To alleviate food insecurity, we all need to have an integrated approach to these projects and work together. Our communities require the help of all stakeholders, as the public sector and civil organisations cannot do this alone. As PMG, we will not rest on our laurels to donate and bring relief to the communities we serve."
The schools, clinics and hospital all showed their gratitude towards PMG Mining for the good gesture.
Postmasburg Primary school principal, Lynette Stander said: “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to PMG Mining for their generous donation of shading trees to our school – just in time for Arbor day! Not only did they provide these beautiful trees, but they also rolled up their sleeves and helped us plant them. Their commitment to our school community and the environment is truly inspiring.”

Stander stated that the importance of this kind gesture will enhance a greener environment at the school: “Thanks to PMG Mining, our school grounds are now cooler, greener, and more inviting for everyone for the future to come. We look forward to future collaborations that will continue to benefit our students and the environment,” Stander said.
