2024 JOB FAIR A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The 2024 Job Fair has been lauded as a huge success by various leaders, companies and job seekers, among others. The fair – which consists of Chinese-invested enterprises in South Africa was organized by the South Africa-China Economic and Trade Association (SACETA).  Nearly 2900 job seekers attended the event at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg on April 16th to seek various job opportunities.

Deputy ambassador of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa, Mr. Li Zhigang delivered the keynote address saying that the People’s Republic of China President Xi Jinping reiterated that he supports South Africa’s efforts to strengthen vocational education and promote youth employment, for bilateral relations to bear more golden fruit in the golden era.

PMG Mining Company played a critical role at the event, to ensure hundreds of youth applied for the twelve (12) vacant positions – on the spot – that were available at the mine. The company received just over 300 hundred applications. A rigorous process was conducted to seek possible candidates to join the company.

One of PMG’s employees, Lorato Thejane encouraged job seekers to remain positive in their quest for jobs. Thejane is a beneficiary of the 2022 Job Fair intake at PMG Mining and was appointed as an Asset Controller, with no experience at the time: “Having worked at PMG has brought significant changes in my life – not only financially – but also in my career. PMG has honestly opened doors that I never imagined I would one day walked through,” she said.

Attending the event, South African Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu said the 2024 Chinese-South Africa Job Fair is a culmination of the consistent prioritization of building a better life for all: “As a department of Social Development, the embassy has been of great support – not only to the government in general – but specifically to the department of Social Development by ensuring we have a partnership that relates to practical action and activities. There are projects that we as a department joined that are being done between the two countries by our governments; the flourishing prospects of the partnership is currently unfolding in the development of a poverty alleviation model in Kgomogomo village in the North West province,” she remarked.

South African Minister for Presidency, Monitoring and Evaluation Maropene Ramokgopa, Head of SACETA Zhang Chaoyang, various company CEO’s and managers were also in attendance.
